Vietnam passes extradition law allowing urgent detention for up to 45 days

HANOI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Law on Extradition, which allows police to urgently detain individuals for up to 45 days pending extradition, the local daily Dan Viet reported.

Under the law, Vietnam allows extradition for offenses carrying a minimum sentence of one year or more under both Vietnamese and foreign laws, according to the report.

The law will take effect on July 1, 2026.
