Myanmar aims to export more corn in 2023-24 FY

YANGON, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar aims to export over 2 million tons of corn in the 2023-24 fiscal year beginning in April this year, according to the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association (MCIA) on Friday.

"We export corn to Thailand, Vietnam, China, the Philippines and Malaysia. We export most of the corn to Vietnam, China and Thailand," Phyo Ko Ko Naing, vice chairman of the MCIA, told Xinhua.

There are about 2 million acres of corn cultivation areas in Myanmar, and about 60 percent of its corn is produced in Shan state.

The Southeast Asian country produces about 3 million tons of corn annually. In this fiscal year, Myanmar already exported about 1 million tons of corn, he said.

Myanmar exported 2.3 million tons of corn to foreign countries including China, Thailand, India and Vietnam in the fiscal year 2020-21, official data showed.

In Myanmar, corn is cultivated in Shan, Kachin, Kayah and Kayin states and Ayeyarwady, Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions.
