VIENTIANE, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Ministry of Health on Tuesday reported one new COVID-19 death in the past 24 hours, raising its national death toll to 665.

Laos' COVID-19 tally rose to 215,505 on Tuesday with 57 new cases registered in the past 24 hours, according to a report by the Center of Information and Education for Health under the Lao Ministry of Health on Tuesday.

The National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control reported 57 locally transmitted cases and no imported cases.

Among the new cases, 34 were reported in Lao capital Vientiane, six in Champasak, four in Vientiane and Xayaboury each, three in Savannahet, two in Huaphan and Luang Prabang each, one in Oudomxay and Saravan province respectively.

Lao health authorities advise people to wear masks in public places and to get COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, as the virus is still circulating, although most of the cases are asymptomatic.

The Center of Information and Education for Health warns that even though people have no symptoms of COVID-19, they can still transmit the virus to other individuals.

Preventive measures recommended include social distancing, regular hand washing, wearing a face mask, and limiting face-to-face contact with others.

Laos reported its first two confirmed COVID-19 cases on March 24, 2020.
