HANOI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded 14,978 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, including 14,934 locally transmitted and 44 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.
The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remains the locality reporting the highest number of infections, on Sunday at 2,967 cases, followed by central Da Nang city with 984 cases and northern Hai Phong city with 764 cases.
The new infections brought the total tally to 2,141,422 with 36,719 deaths. Nationwide, 1,804,849 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered.
Some 175.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 73.9 million second shots and 23.2 million third shots, have been administered in the Southeast Asian country, according to the ministry.
Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication and infectivity. As of Sunday, the country has registered over 2.1 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year, the ministry said.
