Vietnam reports 15,959 new COVID-19 cases

HANOI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 15,959 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, including 15,936 locally transmitted and 23 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the place with the highest number of 2,909 cases on Wednesday, followed by central Da Nang city with 892 cases and central Khanh Hoa province with 652 cases.

The infections brought the country's total tally to 2,078,087 with 36,114 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 1,789,188 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered.

Some 171.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 72.9 million second shots and 20 million third shots, have been administered, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication and infectivity.

As of Wednesday, the country has registered over 2 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year. It has also confirmed 108 cases with the new Omicron variant, according to the ministry.
