HANOI, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 16,378 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, including 16,325 locally transmitted and 53 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.
The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the locality with the highest number of infections on Monday with 2,955 cases, followed by central Da Nang city with 924 cases and northern Hung Yen province with 675 cases.
On the same day, health authorities also documented 5,366 COVID-19 cases detected earlier in southern Ca Mau province.
The infections brought the country's total tally to 2,045,290 with 35,788 deaths. Nationwide, 1,747,462 COVID-19 patients have recovered.
Nearly 169 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 72.4 million second shots and 17.9 million third shots, have been administered, according to the ministry.
Vietnam has gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity.
As of Monday, the country has registered over 2 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year, the ministry said.
