Austrian protesters condemn education cuts

The Cambodia News.Net
Wednesday 20th October, 2010

Austrian tertiary students have sided with their professors to protest budget cuts to academic pay and departments.

The students, university professors and deans have marched to protest a budget freeze for higher education.

Rallies involving around 15,000 people have been held in Vienna, Salzburg and Graz, with students insisting that lack of money will mean a bleak future for students and graduates to the professions.

There have been rumours of mass staff lay-offs and university closures in Austria, with the protests following similar demonstrations last autumn when only the students marched.

It has been estimated that Austria’s state-run universities will face a 300 million euro per year shortfall if a budget freeze goes ahead in 2013.
