Fast flowing waters drown Cambodian ferry passengers

Seventeen Cambodians have died in a passenger ferry accident in the north-eastern province of Kratie.

The ferry that sank at around 7:30 pm on Saturday evening in Chhlong Lake, about 310 kilometres northeast of Phnom Penh.

Officials have said a strong current was running when the overloaded ferry went down.

While the ferry was only designed for 25 passengers, more than 30 passengers were believed to be on board.

The ferry, which contained passengers on their way to a Buddhist ceremony, was also loaded with motorbikes and personal possessions.
