Troop withdrawal becomes hot topic for Bush and Maliki
The Cambodia News.Net Friday 18th July, 2008
The withdrawal of American troops from Iraq has been the point of discussion for US President George Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The White House says the two have discussed a general time horizon for reducing the numbers of US troops in Iraq.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino Friday said the two leaders spoke Thursday by secure video conference about a range of issues, including Iraq's improving security conditions and the performance of Iraqi security forces.
Both leaders have reportedly agreed that any reduction would be based on conditions on the ground and not an arbitrary date for withdrawal.
A spokesman for Mr Maliki says the leaders focused on a time frame for the complete transfer of responsibility for security from American to Iraqi forces.
Up to now, Mr Bush has refused to give a timetable for the total withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.
Meanwhile, the US military in Iraq says coalition forces have captured five suspected so-called special group criminals, including a suspected financier of Iranian-sponsored insurgents.
The military issued a statement saying coalition forces staged the raid on Friday in the Admhaiyah section of Baghdad, about three kilometers northwest of Sadr City.
The special groups designation is used by the military to describe Shi'ite insurgents backed by Iran.

Every once in a while we need the wars to sharpen our troop’s skills as rifle men. I can think of a couple in this forum who need to be put out of their misery!

Who is the
This is a good question, who is the “the boss” in Iraq?
Is it bush the invador?
Or his stooge, Maliki?
Or are the people of Iraq?
I sincerely believe that if the people of Iraq, bring this case to the International Criminal Court, to throw these illegal invadors out of their country, along with their stooges who are nothing but lap-dogs to the bush regeme, all of this mess would be cleaned up, and many innocent lives would be saved.
I say, let the people of Iraq, choose their destiny without outside influence, in which these outsiders are nothing but possible robbers who want to take over their natural resources, mascarated as sheeps, but really they are very hungry dangerous wolves.

Sen. JOHN McCAIN’s town hall meeting will explain to American people to understand that the faith of Osama’s (bin Laden’s) national integrity is existed in Iraq, Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki is one of the Arabs learning toward Osama’s thought. Very low-key to what McCAIN administration will fulfill our American Security policy to Iraq is somehow role pattern that is similar to the US military supervising in Philippines; of course US CIA under McCAIN administration can draw the Northern Iraq’s non-Arab Kurds to our American’s side; if US military is necessary to stay in Iraq for “American conflict of interests”, then Kurds is quite qualified to meet the UN’s “Self-determination” to declare the Kurdish Independence from Iraq; the US military will station in Northern Iraq’s Kurdish territory (instead the Southern Shias and Sunnis) to assist an Independent Kurdish Interim Government. Just like our McCAIN’s analysis-team to tell Maliki that if US can put you (Maliki) on stage, the same way, US also can put you (Maliki) down to off-stage. American people will approve Sen. JOHN McCAIN with our GOD BLESS AMERICA’s American Flag, but NOT wielding an Obama’s white-handkerchief to depress our US military morale.

JCS Chairman Says Setting Iraq Withdrawal Timetable 'Dangerous'
20 July 2008 - America’s top military officer says setting a fixed timeline for getting U.S. troops out of Iraq would be a dangerous move.
]
Admiral Mullen says setting a firm timeline would jeopardize all the progress made so far in Iraq. “I think the consequences could be very dangerous in that regard," said Admiral Mullen. “I’m convinced at this point in time that making reductions based on conditions on the ground are very important." During an appearance on the Fox News Sunday television program, Mullen said five American brigades have left Iraq in recent months, as security conditions have improved. And, he said, there is a possibility of a further drawdown before President Bush leaves office in January. “If conditions continue to improve, I would look to be able to make recommendations to President Bush in the fall to continue those reductions," he said.
The presumptive Democratic Party candidate for U.S. president, Senator Barack Obama, has said he wants to withdraw all American troops from Iraq within 16 months, if he is elected president. Obama is currently on a tour of Europe and the Middle East that includes a stop in Iraq. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - in an interview broadcast Sunday on CNN’s Late Edition said the Iraqis want to reach the point where they can take care of their own security needs. She said Baghdad and Washington are not talking about timetables, but are discussing the U.S. role in broader terms. “The day is coming when American forces will step back more and more from combat roles," said Condoleezza Rice. “The day is coming when we will be doing more in the way of training and less in the way of fighting."
During his appearance on Fox News Sunday, Admiral Mullen also stressed that the situation in Iraq is improving. But he acknowledged conditions in Afghanistan remain worrisome. He said various extremist and terrorist groups are joining up in the tough terrain of northern Pakistan and are infiltrating across the Afghan border. “There’s a big challenge for all of us, " said Admiral Mullen. “And it has had an impact on our ability to move forward in Afghanistan." Mullen spoke of mixed progress in Afghanistan, but quickly added that it would be wrong to say the United States and its NATO allies are losing the fight.
